Simple Pleasures: That Special Coffee Mug

Everyone has one, many just don’t know it. If you aren’t sure, take a good look at the coffee mug sitting nearby. Is it the same one you used, say, a week ago? Is it part of a set or a one off that you got for whatever reason and tucked into the cabinet?

No kidding, a good coffee mug is the difference between a cold cuppa whatever (coffee, tea, you name it) and one that holds heat long enough to drink the contents.

It might be thermal, it might be a designer piece, it might be something found at a yard sale or in a second hand shop or gifted by a dear friend who knows how much you enjoy [ fill in the blank ].

The thing about a favorite mug is that it makes the beverage of choice that much better simply by using it.

Think I am wrong? Consider how you react when your favorite is not available and you must make do… If you feel a bit off balance, you have a Favorite whether you know it or not. :)

Don’t mind me, I’m off to clean up the current mug and get ready for a new cuppa …

Enjoy!

Cozy Comfort Food

As I write this there is way more than normal amount of snow on the ground for my area and it was only the day before yesterday that at least half of the county did a run on the grocery store. Yeah, a Bread and Milk Run.

For the uninitiated, a Bread and Milk Run is where the local weather folks warn about serious weather and let you know to stock up because you might not be getting out for the next few days. aka: It is going to be serious outside and you do not want to be there if you can avoid it.

For those folks who are not used to this kind of weather, preparing for it can be a challenge. I look on it as an opportunity to make use of my pantry.

Since we have not had issues (so far) with our power grid, I am thinking macaroni and cheese or possibly a pot of stew. They are filling, warming and some of the most comforting foods imaginable. But, what do you think of as comfort food?

In times when we have the potential for power loss, I look for things that can be eaten cold or room temperature. Peanut butter sandwiches, string cheese and crackers, fruit. I always have a thermos or two filled with hot coffee which always takes the chill off. Keep in mind you do not want to be opening your refrigerator or freezer as that lets the cold air out and could cause issues with the contents of that equipment.

Once the weather returns to somewhat normal and the stores are well stocked, it is a good time to restock the pantry.

In the meantime, settle in, relax and take it one step at a time. Spring will be here before we know it!

Winter Reset…Of A Sort

I don’t know about you but most folks I know are in one of two camps: (1) It is the first of the year so I must start over for everything. Everything. (2) It is the first of the year and I am taking my time to recover from a hectic holiday season and ease into a new year.

Sound familiar?

Frankly, I’ve never been one of those folks in camp 1. I just never thought my life was such that I had only 365 days to make or break before all would be tossed out and I would start over. And, really, why ditch what works? Of course there was that other pesky issue: lack of time and funds to create a magical new existence. Talk about stress! We won’t even think about things like weather or other stuff we have no control over…

Anyway, this year several of my YouTubers seem to be in the same camp, easing into a new year, generally with great thought and deliberation, and taking the time to enjoy what they are doing…in front or behind the camera.

As I write this, my area is undergoing some serious winter weather. We are looking at seriously cold temperatures in an area that rarely gets below 20 degrees on a really cold day in an average winter day. In other words, folks are stressing, fretting, and trying to deal with all the ‘what if’s’ they have no experience with.

I tend to keep a well stocked pantry so I did not have to make a grocery run, which is good because everyone else has and I would be shocked if there are no empty shelves. I have been making use of what is on my shelves. It is amazing how creative you can get when you come across something you forgot you had… Using up the odds and ends also create some great meals.

I’m also checking out my stash in the craft room. I’ve been watching a lot of creative people do what they do best and have been collecting ideas. I already have a list of cards I want to try.

I know a gardener or two who have found themselves contemplating what they want their garden to look like come Summer. Which means they are planning their Spring clean up and ventures to the local garden centers. Are you one of those? Have you ordered your garden catalogs yet?

I wonder how many folks contemplate that Winter Reset is really about looking ahead and not just recovering from the holidays. I know that the early days of January can be just as frantic as the last weeks of December. We often talk about getting off sugar or alcohol, maybe we need to talk about getting off the shopping rush, too?

That is a difficult one to maneuver around as all the retailers are either trying to get rid of old stock or entice you to purchase new stock.

In the meantime, I am settling in with my coffee, contemplating a coffee cake, and enjoying the peace and quiet. Before I know it everything will change again…

From The Reading Table: Holmes, Marple & Poe…

Holmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century by James Patterson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Every once in a while I trip over something that surprises me, exceeds my expectations, and reminds me why I love to read. Or, in my case, listen to audio books 🙂

I have enjoyed James Patterson’s work over the years but never became one of those fans who reads everything. That might have to change. To be honest, I did not realize he was one of the authors until I was at least half way into the book. You see, the title captured my attention and my interest and I just dove in.

The main characters are an interesting collection of people, each of whom has a history, none of whom are actually who they say they are. In fact, that situation is a recurring thread through the book.

The three are very highly skilled operatives who really do know their business. There are several mysteries that require involvement on different levels by each of these folks. The twists and turns will keep you guessing. The solutions of each of the mysteries will either surprise you or make you nod your head because you figured it out early on.

The development of the people we meet and their relationships is very well done. This is Patterson, after all. Not a lot of objectionable language or, for lack of word, gore. Just enough to meet minimum requirements. The pace is good and I did not encounter any slow spots or areas that felt rushed.

It is a great beginning for a series. Yes, I’m crossing my fingers here.

While I enjoyed the reader, and the reading, this is one I would enjoy watching. Just a thought.

Winter Day Pork Chops

We are expecting colder temperatures and some snow in the next day or so. I wanted to have something warm and comforting not to mention easy on the cook. What I came up with is a conglomeration of recipes. Feel free to play as you wish.

I added a liner to my slow cooker and added 1 can of cream of celery soup. To that I put in some garlic powder, onion powder, dried rosemary, mustard powder and a dash of dried sage. I stirred this together and topped it with 6 boneless pork chops setting it on LOW for 6 hours.

If you need a guide, I guesstimate I used about a teaspoon of the garlic and onion, half a teaspoon or less of the rosemary and mustard and maybe a quarter teaspoon of the sage.

If the pork chops you use are enhanced consider if you need salt.

I will check to see if any liquid might be needed as the day progresses. Most likely, it won’t. Remember, I did not add any liquid other than the soup and the meat has liquid in it already.

What will I serve with it? I’m contemplating potatoes in some form or other or I could make some rice. The field is open. I’ll also be adding some vegetable(s).

Simple Pleasures

The Joy of Toast

It might not sound like much but if you, like me, enjoy toast the pleasure of that simple feast can not really be measured.

I love a good sourdough with its firm texture. True it takes longer to toast but the end result can be so satisfying.

A good home loaf like a potato bread or a simple white loaf is great for sandwiches. Using it for a toasted sandwich, like grilled cheese, can be quite an experience, too.

One of my earliest memories is taking the heel or two of a store bought loaf and tucking them into the toaster until they are golden brown and crusty. Slather on the butter and they are heaven. Add a touch of some homemade jam, jelly or fruit butter and the experience is upgraded several levels. But there is one version of toast that doesn’t seem to get a lot of comment these days.

Take that beautifully toasted bread – whatever version you prefer or have on hand – butter it and add some cinnamon sugar. Go ahead, sprinkle it on top of the butter. Take a bite.

Now that I think on it, Land O’Lakes has some fabulous butters. I have enjoyed the honey butter and the cinnamon butter combos but they have some new items that I would love to try out.

As for the combo butters, don’t forget you can make your own to suit your taste.

There is a simple pleasure in enjoying a slice of toast beautifully spread with the topping of your choice. Why not make some with your next cup of tea or coffee?

Making Use of Your Stash of Recipes

Everyone has one

I have yet to come across anyone who cooks who does not have a stash of recipes somewhere. It could be on their phone, computer, a pile of magazines or on their shelves in books.

We might be more alike that we think… Have you got notes of recipes you <cough> want to try…someday? Did you purchase a cookbook because you enjoyed the author’s videos and wanted to try their recipes? Have you been collecting books and magazines over the years? Did you find an amazing book or collection at a car boot sale or second hand store?

As we start a new year I have a radical idea. Why don’t we pull out our stash, go through it and find recipes we want to make and – brace yourself – make them!

After a month or so of Holiday Food coupled with Winter Food Blahs, we need to find something to bring back a little excitement in our meal plans. Maybe one new recipe a week?

Before you head off in a panic, consider that I am not suggesting you buy loads of groceries you don’t normally buy nor add things to your pantry that might get only one use. I suggest you look at what you normally buy and eat, then look at new recipe with similar ingredients.

Tired of the same old chicken? Why not find a new way to make it? Looking for an alternative to the tried and true [ fill in the blank ] with something different?

Pull out your stash of recipes and a collection of bookmarks/sticky notes and your trusty notebook and see what you find that captures your interest. What do you have on hand that you can use? What do you need to buy?

I would bet that there are lots of options.

I would also bet that if you are bored this could be the start of a new adventure in your kitchen.

What are you waiting for?

Quilting

Disappearing Blocks Gone Wild

Not too long ago Missouri Star Quilt Company posted a tutorial about a disappearing pinwheel block. Check it out:

I love Jenny’s take on the pattern and that she reached out to her source, Brita, the Questioning Quilter to not only get her permission to make the tutorial but to give her credit in the video.

Speaking of Brita, I tracked down her YouTube Channel and her website and have been blissfully enjoying her work. Like Jenny, Brita has a clean, clear approach to explaining the blocks and providing options. This is one of my favorites:

Enjoy the possibilities and don’t be shy about encouraging your creative spirit!

Around the House

Time For A Fresh Start

Or just recovering from the Holidays

As much as I enjoy the holidays, I find I look forward to the ‘after party’ as much as the festivities.

There is the fun of the food, gifts, music, movies, etc. but after a while …

Perhaps that is what January is for?

I find myself rooting around the freezer, pulling out older veg for a soup. Corralling the crackers and cheese as a side. Finding places for the gifts that I want to be able to find/use rather than tucked away in a corner I rarely visit.

We are slowly but surely working our way through the pie and cookies. Ditto for the holiday chocolates…something I admit I will be sad to see the empty package of.

A Little Goes A Long Way

All that being done and said, what I find myself yearning for is a simple meal that isn’t heavy, fussy, or even – dare I say it – fancy.

Ironic that a few weeks ago we were dreaming of the holiday table and all the goodies it carried. Now we are dreaming of something totally different…

Perhaps that is the magic of the holidays, a chance at a Fresh Start that is, indeed, different from what came before it.

Here’s to cleaning out the pantry, using up the odds and ends, easing into simple, easy, flavorful meals.

We will deal with the rest of the holiday chaos later…right?

Happy New Year, everyone!
