I Know Where I Will Be Wednesday at Noon

If you have been around here for any length of time, you know I enjoy YouTube. Many of the content providers are exceptionally good at their job and the videos they produce are not only well made but enjoyable and often educational, too.

One of the folks I follow regularly is Cathy Zielskey. Cathy produces a variety of videos showcasing her card making. She likes to delve into different techniques, test out products, tinker a bit with design, and basically provide a glimpse into her process and product. She also has a great sense of humor.

Check out a recent article about her HERE.

Cathy produces several videos each week but my Wednesday calendar entry is for her live show that airs at noon my time. While the replay is always available, I find I enjoy sitting in with the rest of her crew watching and listening, chuckling and making notes. Check out the article for links to her 75k Blooper Reel. You’ll understand more when you watch it.

While our styles are different and our approaches are unique, I really like spending time with someone who understand graphic design and has an interesting approach to color. I never come away from watching her that I don’t have food for thought.

And at least one chuckle.

Enjoy!

Are You A Knitter?

Over the years I have tried my hand at many different kinds of crafting. Some worked well, some were fine efforts but obviously not for me. Knitting is one of the latter.

While I have to teach myself to crochet every time I pick up a hook (I crochet so often that it is not unheard of to have a decade or so go by between projects…) knitting just never seemed to make sense to my poor brain. It wasn’t for lack of trying; my aunt made a valiant effort to teach me but in the end we both realized it was a lost cause.

This is why I was so bemused at my captivation with a program called ‘Off Our Needles‘ that runs on Craftsy. You can find the podcast on YouTube and on CraftsyTV.

I enjoy the hosts and the projects are lovely but it is the process that continues to captivate me. I watch very carefully, listen to their instructions and guidance, and awe at the results…all while my brain does back flips and jitters.

For those of you who knit, you will enjoy this series. If you are interested in the skill, the show is a good place to dip your toe as there is a lot of information available for you.

Don’t mind me and my experience, it is just the Universe’s way of reminding folks that not everyone is cut out for every thing…

Enjoy!

MeTV on Roku (2023)

Many of my readers are anxious to find ways to watch MeTV on some streaming platform because they might have lost access to it via over-the-air antenna. I understand completely.

My over-the-air antenna feed is subject to the whims of weather and, unfortunately, the channels I watch most are most affected. <sigh>

While many of us would be absolutely Thrilled if MeTV would create its own app, the reality is that there is expense involved that might be prohibitive, not to mention other issues we are unaware of. That being said, there are options to having MeTV available on Roku – but not just Roku – and if you are willing to pay for it, access is there.

How to Watch MeTV Without Cable

The above link to a CordCutters article on the subject is useful. If you are not using Roku, I would suggest you check with whatever streaming service provider you are using (Amazon Fire Stick, etc) to see if they provide similar access.

While we might not like to admit it, not every free via antenna network is available everywhere. Thankfully, access is available at a reasonably low price. Check out the options and go from there.

Grilled Cheese

I’ve been revisiting the Looney Tunes on YouTube and came across this gem:

I would argue that most kids wouldn’t have a clue about what is going on with Elmer’s love affair with the sandwich. I would also argue that most adults would agree with his appreciation of the sandwich.

This is classic Looney Tunes in so many ways…

Contemplating the Lowly Carrot

Lately I find myself thinking about those foods I actually like but don’t find myself preparing very often. I tend to struggle a bit making sure I have consumed enough vegetables – and I like many vegetables in many forms. Like carrots.

Most of us encountered the lowly carrot as part of a crudites platter along with cauliflower, broccoli, celery and such. Frankly, I think most folks were more into the dip (usually Ranch) than any of the veg. <shrug>

If you are one of us who were raised by cooks who tended to overcook vegetables – any vegetables, we remember those over done, mushey orangey things that did not inspire eating.

I think that carrots need a review if only to remind ourselves that there is potential for something delicious. Consider:

Steaming carrots allows us to cook them without their turning into paste and preserving their sweet flavor. Speaking of that flavor, if you like sweet potatoes carrots should be an easy shift because their flavors are similar.

Taking that a step farther, try adding some butter and cinnamon to your carrots. You might be surprised. Add a touch of brown sugar, too. Remind you of anything?

Roasting carrots deepens the flavor and when combined with potatoes in a pot roast the end result is … divine. It all comes down to the roasting.

Don’t overlook the old standby, carrots and peas. Both are mild flavored, which is not a negative, and are a great addition to casseroles and soups, not to mention as a side with pretty much any protein.

Carrot salad can be iffy but there are quite a few recipes out there that are not the usual mix. America’s Test Kitchen did one a few years ago that changed Julia Collin Davison’s opinion about carrot salad. Search ‘ATK Carrot Salad Recipes’ to see all kinds of great options.

While you are checking out the salads, don’t forget to check out the soup recipes. A nice carrot soup can be an unexpected pleasure.

As I contemplate my meal plan for the next month I will be adding carrots in as many places as I can. They are easy to prepare, easy on the budget, and tasty on the plate.

Returning To The Craft Room

Are you like me, who finds herself stressing over producing [ fill in the blank ] prior to a holiday or special event to the point where I end up stopping myself in my tracks?

I like to craft but I do not like to craft under a deadline. For me, deadlines take all the fun out of the process.

Sadly for many crafters deadlines are a necessary thing. They produce items for gifts or to sell and the calendar is sending shade over the Gotta Have This Done By…. date.

I have found myself enjoying watching the process but not inclined to jump in and get ready for the next Event. <sigh>

This month’s Call Me Crafty Al Sheetload of Cards inspired me to play a bit in my craft room and I have to admit I liked the result. Check out Crafty Al on YouTube to see what she has shared and see if it is something that inspires you, too.

Who knows? I might find myself spending more time in my craft room using up that stash of papers… 😀

Comfort Food: Chicken and Rice

Is there anything simpler than chicken and rice? You have so many options when it comes to chicken. My particular favorite is to bake it in the oven. Breaded or not. Sauced or not. A good baked chicken can be so easy and tasty.

Now there is a lot of leeway when it comes to baking chicken. I like to take a flat of boneless skinless chicken breasts and put them in the oven (or slow cooker), season them and let them go until they are cooked tender and tasty. I also have my favorite breaded chicken that is already seasoned. It really comes down to what you have on hand and what you want to make.

Rice, however, can be a bit fussy depending upon how you do it. Or where. When I lived on the west coast I always cooked my rice on the stove top and I never had any issues. Moving to the Midwest, however, brought some interesting challenges. Yes, I can cook it on the stove top and half the time it worked and half the time it was pretty iffy. Keep in mind I used the exact same recipe. My solution: I bought a rice cooker. For the most part it produces excellent rice. Occasionally I have issues…like when I add frozen veg to the steamer basket without allowing for the extra water on the veg.

Dan over at America’s Test Kitchen has done some research and provided excellent information on how to cook rice. Check it out:

FWIW That First Knuckle Trick works every single time.

So, when you are looking for comfort food that is easy to prepare and tasty, why not cook up some chicken and rice?

Need Help Choosing Streaming Services?

Check out THIS ARTICLE from TV Insider. It has all the information you need if you are contemplating pay streaming platforms.

I always suggest you make a list of what you want to watch and then see who will be showing it. You could be quite surprised. Or shocked.

I also always suggest that you routinely review your Watchlists to see what you have actually watched and what you haven’t. It could help you decide what service to cancel and what to add.

Musings

Enjoying The Quiet

This is the time of year when I find myself looking for ways to be quiet and disconnect from the holiday hustle and bustle.

I find myself looking for quiet music. Holiday music runs the gamut from loud and boisterous to quiet and serene. There is a wide variety of options out there and if I am inclined I experiment a bit just to see what I can find.

This time of year RadioOnceMore’s holiday programming can be pure pleasure to listen to. For those of us who have listened to these shows for a long time, revisiting them is a touch of comfort programming. From Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Fibber McGee & Molly to The Lone Ranger and Dragnet, the celebration of the holidays reminds us of what used to be.

How does this extricate me from the hustle and bustle?

There comes a time when, like taking a vacation, changing what I am listening to or watching is as good as a vacation. Like baking treats that we don’t bake most of the year. While we might enjoy banana bread all year round, how often do we bake pumpkin bread? Popcorn might be a regular on movie nights but when was the last time you made popcorn balls?

So, I am looking for quiet changes to allow me to ease into the holidays and enjoy the experience without stressing over a list of Things I Need To Do By Christmas (and probably won’t accomplish on time…).

The neat thing is that I can do that holiday baking while listening to the music or radio shows… 😀

Enjoy!

Getting Comfortable With Upheaval

Of the Viewing Schedule

I won’t lie, I miss the good old days when there was an actual, reliable viewing schedule of the shows available on TV. I like the rhythm of knowing what I will be settling in to watch during the week. <sigh>

Don’t get me wrong, bingeing is an interesting alternative providing, of course, I can find something I actually want to binge. Not always easy.

I just spent some time catching up with Frasier (2023) on Paramount+ and had to check to see how many episodes I have yet to see. More than I thought… And I like this show! In some odd way, it could be said that I am hoarding those episodes…

There are some shows that I watch on the night they drop without fail. And those are few and far in between.

There are shows I used to watch on the night they were scheduled but this year, for all the reasons we all know about, that schedule has been shattered. I am looking forward to the return of many come February, but in the meantime…

December has always been a difficult time for scheduled TV because of all the extra programming. Holiday specials used to fill up the calendar but many of those have gone by the wayside. You can find them, of course, if you take the time to browse through your streaming platforms or delve into On Demand. Some networks have scheduled blocks of specials to break up the monotony of reruns.

Why is it the reruns we want to see are not the reruns we are able to see?

RadioOnceMore has already begun their December Holiday Special Programming. 24/7 old time radio shows. Check out their website for the schedule and where to listen.

The Kennedy Center Honors will air on December 3, 2023. I look forward to this every year and this year the winners list is awesome.

Off to add this to my calendar!
