Snacking Just Got Easier

And tastier, too!

I have a confession to make. I love a good snack. I try not to indulge too often but every once in a while I love a good crunchy pretzel or some wonderful chocolate, not to mention some great nuts.

Thanks to a referral from one of my favorite YouTubers, a few months ago I tried Nuts.com for myself. I was impressed enough to order again.

While I tested the waters, so to speak with my first order, my second was a deep dive into the types of things I look for at my local market.

I love pretzels and their Bourbon Street Mix is a great collection of sizes, shapes and flavors that does not overwhelm and is great for those times when you just want a good munch.

I love chocolate and am always looking for excellent products. I also love a good chocolate covered raisin or bridge mix. Nuts.com has both. The chocolate is rich and flavorful without melting all over your hands. Everything is fresh and flavorful, too.

Sesame sticks are those flavorful little gems that can be a great addition to a salad or just a good munchie. I’m fond of the Honey version, but they have a variety of flavors.

Do you also love those little fish cheese crackers? Guess who has a version that is just that little bit different and still tasty?

I am thinking ahead to my holiday gift prep and can already see where these items could be quite the addition. I’m contemplating my home made party mix with those pretzels and nuts. Chocolate and nut bark could be great, too. Or, if I get behind, I could simply give a gift from Nuts.com that will be shipped directly to their door.

Their website is easy to navigate and there are some great offers available to first time customers, in addition to return customers.

From The Reading Table: This Time Together: Laughter & Reflection

This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been a fan pretty much my entire life. I loved ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ and was devastated when I learned that they were closing production. To be able to watch the reruns has been a joy.

One of the things I loved about this book is the way Carol takes us through the show and gives us the behind the scenes perspective. She truly is a professional who knows her job and it shows not only in the book but in the show. For those of us who loved the DVD extras, this book is one of those. aka: All the stuff you never thought about before but now that you know…

If you love Carol Burnett, if you love comedy, if you love learning the behind the scenes stuff, if you just enjoy lots of good stories, I think you will enjoy this book.

Cartoons

The Latest On The Toons

We have more news on MeTV Toons. Check out the website HERE.

It is interesting to see the evolution of the channel and I am both excited for it to debut and a bit sad that it isn’t available in my area…yet. (Fingers crossed.)

That being said, there are alternatives for those of us who enjoy cartoons. I’ve found a lot of Hanna-Barbera over on Tubi – which just happens to be free. Actually, there is quite an interesting selection in addition to the HB mentioned on Tubi. I’ve found The Magic School Bus in addition to some other former PBSKids offerings.

If you browse your free streamers you might be surprised to discover what is on offer.

Happy Browsing!

Polenta Torta Is An Unusual Side Dish

I caught Lidia’s latest video today and my mouth watered. Check it out:

Yum!

Now, I know some might think this is more of a colder weather dish, but I can see it as a great accompaniment to grilled chicken, pork, maybe even some beef. Something simply prepared to balance the flavors of the cake.

Thank you, Lidia!

What do you think? Is this something you would like to try? Let me know.

From The Reading Table: Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me by Whoopi Goldberg

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been savoring this book for as long as possible. As I prefer audio books, and this one is read by the author herself, it has been pure heaven.

I have been a fan for as long as Whoopi has been in the public realm. I’ve read many of her books. I enjoy that she speaks her truth without apology.

This book is a tribute to her mother and her brother. It is a memoir of many wonderful, and no so wonderful, times in her life.

I can honestly tell you that for the most of this book, I have had a smile on my face as I listen to her tell her stories. Granted there have been a few spots where tears took the place of the smiles, but even then there was a touch of … maybe a small smile as the story unfolded.

If you know Whoopi, you will more than likely know what to expect. If you don’t know her, this might be surprising, shocking even.

This one is a pleasure and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

From the Reading Table: Killing Time by Jodi Taylor

Killing Time by Jodi Taylor

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Once again, Jodi has not disappointed. What an incredible listen!

Team 236 is in crisis. There is concern that the team will no longer survive. Then, thanks to some inventive thinking, Mikey creates a rather curious method of criminal restraint and the Time Police HQ finds itself struggling to recover. (I have to admit, I thought Mikey’s idea was quite a solution to a problem, but I never expected what happened…)

On top of all of that, Jane learns of 2 underage time travelers (illegals) who might be in trouble and we are off on one of the most amazing, astounding, and impactful trips.

I have always appreciated Jodi’s way with a story. She has a way of gathering older threads, sneaking them into the current story, surprising us with the unexpected and moving forward with character evolution all while tossing in some well needed doses of humor. And that is even before she drops the cliffhanger in our laps.

Once again Zara Ramm does an amazing job as reader for the audio version of the book.

I could, okay am, thrilled to be spoiled by both Taylor and Ramm.

What a Summer Read (listen)!

More Vintage Recipes, Please!

I caught Glen and Friends over on YouTube recently and decided to have a bit of a binge. One of the things I most enjoy is the array of interesting vintage recipes and the occasional “Now, why didn’t I think of that!” moment.

I love biscotti but that baking twist caught me off guard.

I’ve long been a fan of old cookbooks. One of my favorite features of the channel is when Glen unboxes cookbooks he has been sent in the mail. There have been lots of goodies in those books!

While he provides a wide variety of recipes and ideas, Glen also provides a lot of history, too. Win/Win for sure!

Check out the video above to see this great baking twist and, if you are inclined, subscribe to the channel for more great ideas for your next Kitchen Adventure!

Love Those Vintage Recipes!

I somehow missed this episode of Glen and Friends when it debuted. That being said, when I did see it, it brought more than one smile to my face.

Yum!

While we love to love on those <cough> modern recipes, it has been said that there is really nothing new under the sun. This vintage recipe takes us back to a time before the convenience foods we are inundated with today. Yes, there were what could be called convenience foods back in the day – hence Glen’s discussion of the 1 ounce square of chocolate – but the difference is astounding.

What I love about vintage recipes is the return to classic flavor profiles and the use of techniques that often provide a better result than some of the modern versions. Watching Glen is a primer on how things used to be done and, often, why.

While modern flavor choices are often quite different, it is interesting to contemplate that what was the norm in 1938 was more often more flavorful than what came before it. Why? The availability of ingredients.

This recipe is accessible for the modern cook and should be easy to prepare. I am adding it to my list, are you?

Unexpected Changes

I’ve always loved radio. I grew up in the era when the world shifted from AM to FM and it was possible to hear some amazing stations if you happened to be in the right place at the right time.

When I was a kid, on a small farm in the top northwest corner of Arkansas, it was possible to listen to the Chicago CBS Affiliate station every night. At 9 p.m. (bedtime for me) the CBS Radio Mystery Theater came on and listeners were treated to some amazing radio dramas.

Sometimes I could get lucky and pick up a station from Mid to Western Kansas that was running Old Time Radio shows on Sunday. Fibber McGee and Molly. Jack Benny. George Burns and Gracie Allen. The shows were fabulous even though the reception wasn’t.

In our corner of the world, radio stations played a lot of Top 40 songs or focus on specific genres, like Country & Western or Rock & Roll. Granted, this wasn’t unusual across the country but genres and playlists changed depending upon the area and the station.

I had a friend who would lay in bed every night and listen to the big talk shows that were on the air from the large markets. This was LONG before talk radio and shock jocks were a Thing.

Radio has evolved over the decades. One of the more interesting evolutions has been Internet Radio Stations. These seem to have opened space for aficionados to create stations themselves. They have managed to provide life for those genres, like Old Time Radio, to be available to listeners who love them.

We were recently hit by several major storms which knocked out power, and the Internet, for several days. One of the unexpected side effects of this was a return to listening to actual radio stations.

Wow!

I rediscovered a couple of favorite local stations. I realized how much I had forgotten what it was like to listen to music I hadn’t heard in years (!!!!), to listen to disc jockeys who were in tune with their area, to hear local news – real local news.

All it took was a small portable radio and some batteries. Oh, and the curiosity and courage to roll the dial and see what was available.

In a world that seemed to have been silenced when the power went off, the sounds from that dial were a reminder that other folks were out there, too.

As much as I enjoy Internet radio and the ability to listen to radio across the globe, the intimacy of the local radio station was balm during a stressful time. A touchstone providing comfort and information.
