Taking a Breath

Or OMG There is a lot coming to my library!

I recently checked my Preordered list over on Audible.com and gulped. Not in a bad way, mind you, but I admit it was a bit daunting.

What is it about authors who publish regularly but, for some odd reason, seem to do so around the same time????!!!!! On one hand it is great to have new material. On the other hand it is a bit daunting trying to figure out how to get through everything in a timely manner.

Gulp!

In my house, we have managed to work our way through every one of the season (or series) finales for the current season. Almost back to <cough> normal. I have yet to catch up on a couple of things tucked to the side for ‘later’. There were good reasons for that…I think.

I’ve also looked at the proposed new season schedules for the networks. Yep, one more indication that we are returning to ‘normal’.

Over on YouTube I recently discovered a series of videos dedicated to those long lost series that didn’t survive into a second series/season. I remember some of them, but I have to admit that when I look back and compare the schedule and popularity it isn’t surprising that they didn’t make the cut.

I say this as I have been reading a lot of folks on both sides of the screen mourning the loss of series. As frustrating as it can be to lose something you look forward to watching, at the end of the day it comes down to economics. Some things never change.

In the meantime I’m looking to see what is available to watch and looking for that Summer Must See show.

I’m also astounded to recognize that we are almost into June.

Looks like I will need to restock the ice bin, make some iced tea, and settle in to enjoy some long looked for treasures.

From The Reading Table: An Assassination on The Agenda

An Assassination on the Agenda by T.E. Kinsey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been a fan of this series since the beginning but this addition has a slightly different feel to it. It feels like the author has hit his stride.

This is not ‘just’ a murder mystery. The focus is on the efforts to stop an assassination attempt which could (did) start WWI.

While the core relationships still hold firm, we get the opportunity to see Lady Hardcastle and Flo do what they do best.

The writing is crisp and the twists and turns kept me hanging in there.

Excellent addition to a great series!

The Simple Sandwich

There really is a method to the madness after all.

While sandwiches can be daily affairs created with work or school lunches in mind, there are those creations that are so beautifully balanced, perfectly filled creations that exceed the norm.

Unless, of course, you routinely exceed the norm. 🙂

I’ve had sandwiches that I recall years later. Beautifully crafted works of art that were a pleasure to eat. They far exceed those that require multiple napkins to keep me from wearing the thing. Hint: I rarely, if ever, remove the wrapping from any sandwich simply to save the napkins for their intended use and to keep me from making a mess.

Enjoy Lan Lam’s great tips and tricks and keep them in mind when you craft your next sandwich!

Sometimes Simple is Better

Easy Comfort Food

We like to think we keep our meal plans simple but every once in a while we find that we need to make them even simpler.

I recently found myself fretting over my next grocery order. I knew what was in my pantry and my freezer. I knew what I was inclined for…maybe. I knew what I was not in the mood for. Now what?

After days of browsing recipes and contemplating options and debating and … You get the idea. Anyway, after all that I ordered some ground beef and baking potatoes.

The idea was a meatloaf and baked potatoes that would feed the soul and feed the tummy for a few days. Left overs could be maneuvered into a soup or with some pasta or maybe sandwiches.

I pulled out my packet of Lipton Recipe Secrets, some panko bread crumbs, a couple of eggs, some ground black pepper and about 2 pounds of very lean ground beef. Like 93% lean. I did not add salt because I wasn’t sure how much was in the Recipe Secrets and I forgot to add the garlic powder I would normally add.

After preheating the over to 375 degrees and spraying my broiler pan, I gathered all my ingredients and mixed them well before shaping the entire mass into a loaf that was almost, but not quite, 2 inches high and maybe 4 inches wide. I tucked it not quite in the middle of the broiler pan so I had room for 2 large baking potatoes that I had scrubbed.

The meat loaf took about an hour to cook through but the spuds took an additional 30 minutes to get to that perfect texture. The meat had a chance to rest, which worked out perfectly.

While I might tinker with seasonings the next time I make this, I will make this again. It was easy, flavorful, and produced enough for several meals.

Can’t beat that!

Rainy Saturday Afternoon

As a rule, I like rainy weather. A nice, gentle rain can be quite soothing and peaceful. Lately, however, we have had all kinds of rain, very little of it quiet or peaceful.

I’m contemplating my next grocery shop. I plan on restocking next week, so I am contemplating what I have on hand, what I am in the mood for, and what strikes my fancy. I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t mind a big fruit salad. All the talk recently about berries and shortcake have made their mark. LOL!

I am also thinking about a nice pork roast that can be munched on for several days over several dishes. From the basic roast and potatoes to taco or burrito filling to mix with scrambled eggs, to toss with pasta and sauce, there are quite a few options. It will depend upon what I find in the market.

It doesn’t hurt that I caught Cheryl’s weekly What’s For Tea over on YouTube. Lots of interesting goodies in her grocery shop! I also caught See Mindy Mom and appreciated her quick meal ideas. Sometimes I find I just want something familiar but new…if that makes any sense at all.

In the meantime, on this rainy Saturday, I am thinking waffles for dinner… Add some bacon on the side and I feel a smile on my face. Simple. Tasty. Easy. Dinner!

From The Reading Table: Tales from Randomland

Tales from Randomland: Vol 1 by Justin Scarred

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been following Justin on YouTube since I came across his Live Fast Die Poor channel and some amazing Disneyland trips. Over the years I’ve been privileged to be one of those faithful viewers who couldn’t wait to find out where we were heading off to next. Frankly, it was astonishing to realize that I’ve been watching about as long as he’s been bringing vlogs to YouTube.

Like many, many other viewers, not to mention proud fellow members of the Sometimes Mob, it was easy to connect with this guy who was so happy to show us things, share information, enjoy the jokes and wonder at the magic of the world.

Every once in a while we would sit down for a heart to heart talk. Those talks were where we started to realize that this guy was a lot more than just a silly joke or odd factoid.

This book is, in its way, one of those heart to heart talks. Amongst all the crazy antics to film those great videos are bits of truths and some deep honesty that might catch you by surprise. There are some truly amazing people, too.

In a way, this book is the story of a journey to reclaim the self and to finding the path out of the darkness. It is the beginnings of a community who love some seriously off the wall and seemingly unconnected stuff. It is a reminder that there are some good folks out there if you have the courage to just look and listen.
